In honour of the last day of 2013, I’ve made a small awards ceremony for my favourite books!  Let me know what books you would award these to in the comments :)!

Night Film was a whirlwind ride for me. While I read this book, I literally thought of nothing else. I was so enthralled in the story and couldn’t shake the eerie feeling that Cordova was real, lurking in the dark corners of the film industry.

Burial Rites was a special kind of something for me. I have never encountered such a wonderfully constructed atmosphere. The prose dripped with ice — that cold, haunting feeling of death and winter nights. The writing was beautiful, the characters were fantastic and just.. ahh. So good.

I don’t read a whole lot of Non Fiction, but this year Blood took the cake, ten times over. I may be slightly biased, as Lawrence Hill is not only one of the nicest men you will ever meet, but also a friend.  However, this book is an absolutely wonderful and passionate exploration of blood and it’s symbolic and literal meaning in our lives.

Shadow and Bone.  What can I say?!  Adventure, creativity at it’s finest, gorgeous writing, amazing world-building, addictive characters.  Okay, clearly I can say a lot.  This one was AWESOME.

And yes, I am the last person on earth to read Catching Fire.  I sprint-read it before seeing the movie because I desperately wanted to read the book first.  I had 20 pages left when I walked into the theatre (a little heart-broken there) and read those pages as soon as I returned home that night. This one was just as amazing as the first. Loved it!

Comic books were my newest love this year.  It started with Locke and Key and has only grown since then.  Saga and Locke and Key are both FANTASTIC graphic novel series.  Locke and Key is horror, Saga is mostly sci-fi, and though neither are for the faint of heart, both are exceptional in their storylines and artwork. I couldn’t recommend them more!

And that’s it for me!  I am sooo ready to start my 2014 reading and am determined to make this a fantastic reading year!

  1. You have definitely inspired me to read more graphic novels in 2013. I love them, but my library has a crap collection and I’m terrible at buying them for myself. But I love them, so I should suck it up and make the investment!

  2. Love it! Now I want to assign my choices to your categories!

Best fiction: May We Be Forgiven by AM Homes and Cube People by Christian McPherson… and I also can’t bear to leave out one I just finished 5 mins ago, The Love Affairs of Nathaniel P by Adelle Waldman

Best non-fic: Probably Lean In by Sheryl Sandberg but I also enjoyed The End of Men and the Rise of Women by Hanna Rosin

Best teen: Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell

Best graphic novel: Calling Dr. Laura by Nicle J Georges and When David Lost His Voice by Judith Vanistendael

… man, I thought I liked a lot more “hip/indie” stuff! I’m mainstream, but who cares, I loved these books. :)

    • Blood is fantastic! I love how accessible it is. I find that I get lost in a lot of non-fiction, but this one was easy to follow, super informative and beautifully written! I hope you get it eventually and that you enjoy it :). I think this will be the first book I’ve made YOU buy instead of the other way around :P.
