BoB9.0-200x200

I love the idea of readathons, mostly because I love any excuse to read more than usual (see Exhibit A: I really should do laundry, but.. I have to read!) Though I always have ambitions to participate, I never seem to make it past the first few days. BUT NOT THIS TIME!

My fiance has recently decided to go back to school for his Masters and has turned into a scholarly machine, studying at least two hours a night for his GMAT. His dedication to spending as much time as he can to getting a fab mark means I have a lot of me time each night, starting TODAY.  What perfect timing!

So I’ve decided to participate in the Bout of Books Readathon 9.0!  This is one of the most beloved online book events (along with the Dewey’s 24 Hour Readathon) and I am going to make a serious effort for it this week!

So let’s set some goals, shall we..

  • Read 100 pages a day.
  • Finish at least 3 books between today and Sunday night. (These can include graphic novels.)
  • Discover some new BookTubers or Bloggers who will be participating in this readathon!

I am going to adopt Sarah’s (from Sarah Says Read) slightly modified template and update this same post each day.  I love her GIF additions too, so I am going to also do those :).

Alright everyone – LET’S READ!

Monday
Number of pages I’ve read today: 101
Total number of books I’ve read: 0
Books I read from:  Half Bad by Sally Green, Holidays on Ice by David Sedaris and The Book of Awesome by Neil Pasricha
#todayinsixwords: iwillgetto100pages

  • Seeing as I JUST made my goal, you can tell that it was a solid sprint to the finish line. I forced my eyes open until I finished because I refuse to be beaten by my own goals this time around!
  • I’m reading an ARC of Half Code at the moment and it is AMAZING! I believe it comes out at the beginning of March and I highly recommend everyone check it out!  It is the darkest YA book I think I have ever read.
  • I’m reading the end of Holidays on Ice, which I didn’t finish in December because it really isn’t my kind of book.  I enjoy Sedaris’s writing but this collection is just .. not working for me.
  • The Book of Awesome is never on my “currently reading” lists because my fiance and I have been reading it together for ages.  We read a couple every few nights just for fun and we read a few last night to push my total to the 100 mark as I slowly slipped into dreamland.
  • All in all, DAILY GOAL ACHIEVED! :)

Tuesday
Number of pages I’ve read today: 112
Total number of books I’ve read: 1
Books I read from: Holidays on Ice by David Sedaris, The Encyclopedia of Early Earth by Isabel Greenberg and Stop What You’re Doing and Read This! by Various Authors.
#todayinsixwords: wassickbutstillreadlots

  • Woke up with a head cold and an aching body (could have been due to the two nice tumbles I took on the ice that is currently paving our front walkway!) so I worked from home.  During lunch, I read, and during the hours I would have normally been on public transportation, I read. In the evening, I had a long bath and read. Then got into bed and read.
  • I finished Holidays on Ice, which I’m super happy about, because though I did laugh out loud at a story near the end, this collection just wasn’t my cup of tea.
  • I read an essay in Stop What You’re Doing and Read This! by Carmen Callil, the woman who founded Verigo Publishing. Her passion for books is palpable!
  • I also started The Encyclopedia of Early Earth, which is ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL!

Wednesday
Number of pages I’ve read today: 30….
Total number of books I’ve read: 1
Books I read from: Eating Animals by Jonathan Safran Foer
#todayinsixwords: notimetoreadmajorfail

  • This morning, the subway was JAM packed. I had no space to read :(.  Then I had to go pick up a warmer coat because it is F-R-R-R-REEZING in Toronto this month. Then my friend drove me home. Then I read a few pages in the tub. Then I got into bed with every intention to read but it ended up more like this…

Sorry everyone :(. I will make it up tomorrow!

Thursday
Number of pages I’ve read today: 144!
Total number of books I’ve read: 2
Books I read from: Eating Animals by Jonathan Safran Foer and The Encyclopedia of Early Earth by Isabel Greenberg
#todayinsixwords: manireallylovegraphicnovels

  • I only read a few pages on the subway this morning (of Eating Animals) but got home and finished The Encyclopedia of Early Earth!  Though the end wraps up very quickly (I wanted it to keep going :(!) the book was SO beautiful. I highly recommend you guys check it out!
  • I am only 13 pages behind my running total goal of 400 now! I can make that up this weekend, no problemo!

Friday
Number of pages I’ve read today: 0…
Total number of books I’ve read: 2
Books I read from: None
#todayinsixwords: finallyspentsometimewithman

  • Though I’m embarrassed to report that no reading was done today, it was for a good reason. Seeing as my fiance has kept himself glued to the desk all week studying, I have hardly seen him. When I got home on Friday night, I was exhausted, and all I wanted to do was put on my pjs, get on the couch and spend some lazy time with him.

Saturday
Number of pages I’ve read today: 0…..
Total number of books I’ve read: 2
Books I read from: Nothing..
#todayinsixwords: breakingbadissodamnaddictive

  • I woke up this morning with every intention to make up for yesterday.  Then, Jay and I thought we’d just watch an episode of Breaking Bad while we had our coffee. The weather was pretty terrible, so it was the perfect morning to be lazy.
  • But.. as one who watches the show knows, you can never watch just one.
  • Six hours later, it was time to get ready for our evening plans.  No reading was done, but .. BREAKING BAD IS SO GOOD!
  • As a side note (because I’m writing this as if it were the day of, but really it’s Monday morning and the Golden Globes were last night) I actually clapped and woot’ed when Bryan Cranston got the Globe, and right after, BB won for the entire show. What a wonderfully, well-deserved moment :).

Sunday
Number of pages I’ve read today: 115!
Total number of books I’ve read: 2
Books I read from: Issues 12-16 of REVIVAL
#todayinsixwords: sundayiscomicbookreadingday

  • Sunday is my favourite day to read comics, so in the morning, I went to the comic book store and picked up the remaining REVIVAL issues (waiting for the Volume Bindup is too hard!) and read them all.  I love that series!
  • All in all, I wanted to read 700 pages this week, and I made it to 502. That’s not SO bad!  I’m happy I did this readathon and enjoyed every minute I spent with the books!  And though I had a few bad days, for me, this was an impressive feat!

Hope you all had a wonderful readathon!!

Let me know if you are participating and what your goals are in the comments!

  1. I know I’ve said it before, but I really love your blog posts, and the gifs to go along with your updates above are brilliant, especially the one with the dog – that happens at least once a day for me!

I am so excited to read the Encyclopedia of Early Earth seeing as how much you love it!

And maybe one day too, I will finally participate in a readathon!

  2. I’d say you rocked that readathon! And if you haven’t read other Sedaris books, do not judge him on Holidays on Ice. I didn’t like that one either but have loved Me Talk Pretty One Day, Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim, and When You Are Engulfed in Flames.

    • Thank you Andi :)! And I will definitely try more Sedaris! I love his stories about his own life, but the Holidays on Ice stories were weird. Most of them were just made-up, and I didn’t realize that was in the book. I went in expecting to hear more about his crazy family. But I also own Naked so I will give that one a shot :).
