Pulling out my agenda today to jot down my weekly plans, I realized.. it’s almost August!  Where did July go?!  Is it just me, or does time go by so much faster when you’re an adult. The summer seemed never-ending as a kid, and now you can blink and miss it.  Though, I must admit, I do love fall and winter too..

So I just wanted to do some summarizing, since I feel like I’m in the middle of a lot and have finished almost nothing as of late.  Last week, Jay and I went to Cuba.  The plan was to do nothing but lay on the beach and read. Though the heat gave me a run for my money, I feel so much more educated about the Cuban people and their lives now than I ever have before (and it makes me want to do more research too). I think I spent most of the trip asking questions, but after that, I read. I brought 7 books with me, arguing with Jay that I needed selection and with long days to do nothing but lay on the beach, I would have all the time in the world to pick through my books.  But .. it was not so. I did indeed have a lot of time, but somehow I still didn’t manage to read as much as I thought. I got halfway through The Cuckoo’s Calling (which I am loving) and a little more than halfway through an ARC of The Supernatural Enhancements which comes out in August. I feel like those two books were the perfect beach reads and I can’t wait to finish them both.

Buuuuuuttt.. I left bringing mostly books I hadn’t started, and left my regular reads at home. I didn’t want to bring things that would weigh down my suitcase that I could finish in a day.  So now, I come home to three half-read books, with two more. My goal for the next few weeks is to work my way through finishing them all!

Also, during vacation, I had a very weird desire to read Kathryn Stockett’s The Help, which got me thinking about my list of Books I HAVE to Read (Mostly in 2014) in which The Help was included. I planned to read 3-5 of these books this year, all of which I’ve owned for a while and needed to get to.  I forgot to include it in my mid-year update so I thought I would share it with you here! I think I will pick up The Help this month but if you have any little encouragements for other ones on this list, please let me know!

Gone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell
The Book Thief by Marcus Zusak
Her Fearful Symmetry by Audrey Niffenegger
Special Topics in Calamity Physics by Marisha Pessl (READ!)
The Secret History by Donna Tartt (READ!)
The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss
Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins
The Sugar Queen by Sarah Addison Allen
The Road by Cormac McCarthy (READ!)
The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman
The Help by Kathryn Stockett
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
Looking for Alaska by John Green
The Radleys by Matt Haig
The Art of Fielding by Chad Harbach

And that’s about it! I hope you guys had a wonderful week last week! And for the sake of asking, how many books are YOU currently reading right now? I am on five and feeling like that is A LOT. Way more than my usual two.. Eek!

  1. Good to see you back! I hope you loved your trip, it sounds like it was fabulous :)
I’ve read and absolutely loved The Book Thief, The Night Circus, and Looking for Alaska. I don’t have much to say except I absolutely loved all three and I highly recommend you get to them sooner rather than later. I’d say all three make it to my all-time favourites list.
Right now I’m reading 2 books and making fairly slow progress on both of them, honestly. Attachments by Rainbow Rowell and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by JKR. It’s honestly really nice reading some Harry alongside my usual reads, gives me the perfect amount of choice depending on my mood. I’m still 10 books behind schedule on my Goodreads goal, but I took the next 2 days off from work so I’m hoping to finish at least one of them before Wednesday :)
I also have a small Amazon order including This Is Where I Leave You by Jonathan Tropper on its way to my doorstep. Just thought I’d let you know after seeing your raving review!

    • Woohoo! I hope you enjoy it!
I’m always so behind on my Goodreads goal but.. meh lol. As long as you love what you’re reading, that’s all that matters! I just finished a re-read of The Chamber of Secrets too! :) I’m onto The Prisoner of Azkaban. Woot woot!
      Enjoy the Tropper :)!

  2. That’s a great book list! So glad to see GWTW on there, I’m still thinking about it all the time. I also want to read John Green, so I’ll have to buy a chunk of his books pretty soon! However I did hear that Her Fearful Symmetry is not worth the effort, but who knows? Also, I’m so glad that you’re loving The Cuckoo’s Calling! I loved it, but I know many people don’t. Enjoy the rest of summer!

    • I’ve heard similar things about Her Fearful Symmetry but one of my friends loved it so I am going to stay positive lol. It seems like a winter book, so I’m going to save it.
I am terrified of GWTW lol. I don’t do well with racism and I’ve heard there is a lot in that book, but I do want to read it for the love story. It’s just so huge! I will need to cheer myself on for that one lol. Glad to hear you love it :).

  3. I’m so envious of your trip because it looks positively gorgeous. I’m usually not much of a beach person, but this year I’m craving the open space. I’m so glad you’re enjoying The Supernatural Enhancements! It should be my next book on the e-reader.

    • I can’t wait to see what you think of it! I’m almost finished!
And open space is a great way to describe it. Air and sea! Although I am happy to be home because I’m a total homebody lol.

  4. Sounds like you had a great trip!!! It’s hard to fit reading in on vacation, when there are other things to do.

The Sugar Queen and The Name of the Wind are both really great reads. And I read another book by Matt Haig, The Humans, that was awesome so The Radleys might be as well.
