Warning: My nerd is going to show (like a beacon of light in the middle of the night) in this post. Continue at your own risk.

Like so many nerdy folks, I love lists. One of my favourite lists is the one I start at the beginning of the year, and document every single book I read. I keep this list both on paper, and digitally on Goodreads. I also constantly monitor my Goodreads Challenge progression and have never (and I mean NEVER) been ahead of my goal for more than a few weeks at most at the beginning of the year. I consistently stare down the “You are x% behind your goal” and plot ways that I will catch up (Spoiler alert: I never do, but I love doing it any way.)

A few days ago, while I was bored and re-organizing my shelves, I decided to strategize on ways to complete my goal in the remaining months of 2014. So here are the stats:

– I have 40 books left to read to complete my goal of 85 books in 2014.
– This means 10 books a month (not taking into account that September is half over already and 10 books in this months alone is near impossible, but .. we dream big over here.)
– My usual amount of books read a month is 3-6. Usually 3-4 novels and 2-3 graphic novels.
– Clearly this math doesn’t add up, but remember.. dream!

Knowing it is near impossible for me to read 40 books in the next four months, I decided that it may seem more doable if I lasted the books I want to read. So, just for the hell of it, I wrote down all the books I would love to finish by the end of the year.  To some, this may seem a) ridiculously OCD or 2) unneeded pressure, but in all honesty, writing this out was so much fun, so I thought I would share it with you!  It will be interesting to see, at the end of the year, how many of these I actually read, and also how many books I read that are NOT on this list!

(a) – Have owned for longer than a year (re: alreadies!)
(w) – Do not own, but on wish list

38. Anne of Green Gables (a) (Due for a re-read this holiday!)
39. The Radleys (a)
40. Paris Letters

There is NO way this is going to be a successful list, but I love the idea of looking back and seeing what I do read compared to what I presumed I may read, when the year is over!

Please let me know if any of these absolutely NEED to be finished this year (in your opinion!)

  1. I vote for Fun Home and The Uncommon Reader right away since you can probably read them both on a lazy weekend and bump your reads per month up! :) And I also vote for The Radleys because it was you who got me into Matt Haig and I really enjoyed this one!! :)

  2. Ahah! I love your list! I should make one too! My Goodreads page keeps reminding me that I’m 4 books behind on my reading goal which is making me panic a bit! I’m looking forward to our buddy read in October! And yay for Saga Volume 4 coming out soon! Happy reading!

  3. Well, you should try to finish all of the books that you’ve started, obviously! As for the ones you haven’t yet started, I thought Coraline was amazing (creative and twisted). I haven’t read any of the other ones, though personally I would avoid The Year of Magical Thinking…
